Vitamin C is one of the most widely studied topical skincare ingredients in existence, with research spanning decades and applications from wound healing to photoprotection to hyperpigmentation treatment. It is also one of the most frequently sold in ineffective or poorly formulated products. Understanding why requires a brief exploration of the chemistry, because Vitamin C's instability is not a minor caveat — it is the central challenge that separates products that genuinely work from those that have capitalised on the ingredient's name recognition alone.

What Vitamin C does in skin

L-ascorbic acid, the most biologically active form of Vitamin C, performs several functions simultaneously. It is a potent antioxidant that neutralises free radicals generated by UV radiation and pollution — a mechanism that complements rather than replaces SPF. It inhibits tyrosinase, involved in melanin synthesis, making it effective for fading hyperpigmentation. It stimulates collagen synthesis by acting as a cofactor for key enzymes. And it partially regenerates Vitamin E, extending its protective activity.

A landmark study by Pinnell et al in 2001 established that the optimal topical concentration is ten to twenty per cent — below ten per cent shows diminishing efficacy, and above twenty per cent increases irritation without proportional benefit. The pH must be below 3.5 for meaningful skin penetration, making Vitamin C formulations inherently acidic and a source of sensitivity for some users.

The stability problem

L-ascorbic acid is notoriously unstable. Exposure to light, air, water, and heat all accelerate its oxidation. Once oxidised, the ingredient loses its antioxidant benefit. Storage matters enormously: opaque, airtight packaging significantly extends shelf life. Products in clear glass dropper bottles look appealing on a bathroom shelf but expose the formula to light with every use. Dark glass or airless pump packaging is meaningfully superior. Refrigeration extends the useful life of opened Vitamin C products considerably.

Vitamin C derivatives

The instability of L-ascorbic acid has driven interest in more stable derivatives — ascorbyl glucoside, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate, and 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid among them. These convert to ascorbic acid in the skin, though conversion efficiency varies and the evidence base is considerably thinner than for L-ascorbic acid. Vitamin C in K-beauty and J-beauty

Korean beauty brands have increasingly adopted Vitamin C into brightening lines, often combining it with niacinamide, tranexamic acid, and arbutin for a multi-pathway approach to hyperpigmentation.
