Your skin is under low-level chemical attack every single day. UV light, air pollution, cigarette smoke and even normal metabolic processes generate unstable molecules called free radicals that damage DNA, break down collagen and accelerate ageing. Antioxidants are the skin's defence system against them — and understanding how they work makes it much easier to build a routine that actually holds up.

What free radicals are

A free radical is a molecule that is missing one electron, which makes it chemically unstable. To stabilise itself, it "steals" an electron from a healthy neighbouring molecule — which then becomes unstable and does the same thing. The cascade damages cells and DNA, degrades collagen and elastin, triggers inflammation, and accelerates the visible signs of ageing: lines, dullness, uneven tone, broken capillaries.

The main sources in daily life are UV radiation (even on cloudy days), pollution, blue light from screens, cigarette smoke (your own or second-hand), and the skin's own metabolic processes. Crucially, sun exposure continues generating free radicals for up to three hours after you go indoors — which is one reason why antioxidant protection matters in the evening as well as in the morning.

How antioxidants neutralise them

Antioxidant molecules carry a "spare" electron they can donate to a free radical, neutralising it without becoming unstable themselves. This breaks the chain reaction before it can damage healthy cells. The antioxidant is consumed in the process, which is why skin antioxidant levels need constant replenishing — both from diet and from topical application.

The most useful antioxidants in skincare

Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is the standout: it neutralises free radicals, inhibits melanin production for brightening, and is an essential cofactor in collagen synthesis. It is also the most unstable in formulation, so packaging and freshness matter.

Niacinamide is an antioxidant as well as a barrier-builder, which makes it useful for calming the inflammation that free-radical damage triggers alongside its other barrier and sebum benefits.

Vitamin E (tocopherol) works synergistically with vitamin C — vitamin C regenerates oxidised vitamin E, and together with ferulic acid they form the most well-evidenced topical antioxidant combination available.

Green tea (EGCG), resveratrol, caffeine and centella asiatica each bring anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, though with less clinical skin data than vitamin C. They make strong supporting ingredients in serums and moisturisers, particularly for sensitive or reactive skin.

Retinol functions as an antioxidant in addition to its better-known cell-turnover and collagen-boosting roles — which makes it one of the more versatile actives in any anti-ageing routine.

No single antioxidant covers everything. A serum combining vitamin C with vitamin E and ferulic acid is the most researched topical pairing, but a routine drawing on several antioxidants at different steps is more robust than one big dose of just one.

How to use them

The AM routine is the primary slot, because that is when skin will be exposed to UV and pollution. A vitamin C serum applied after cleansing and before moisturiser and sunscreen gives meaningful daily antioxidant protection. Sunscreen remains non-negotiable alongside it — antioxidants reduce but do not replace UV protection. In the evening, a retinol or a niacinamide-containing moisturiser continues antioxidant support during the skin's overnight repair window.

The verdict

Free radical damage is one of the largest and most preventable contributors to accelerated skin ageing. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen removes the main source; a well-formulated antioxidant serum handles the rest. Vitamin C is the most evidence-backed topical antioxidant for most people, but the full picture — vitamin E, niacinamide, green tea, retinol — is broader than any single ingredient can cover.
